Hide and Seek: Uncovering the Hidden Curriculum in your General Music Class

Every music classroom sends unspoken messages about who belongs, how to behave, and what “good musicianship” looks like. In this action-based workshop, general music teachers will learn to identify these elements of the hidden curriculum and reshape them to better reflect their goals for equity, inclusion, and student agency.

Through collaborative reflection, discussion, and action taken on lesson plans of their choice, you will examine classroom norms, routines, materials, and musical choices—and uncover the messages you may unintentionally communicate to students. Then apply practical tools to your curriculum for more intentional and student-centered design.
